A Gentleman’s Guide to Gym Etiquette

We admire your commitment to fitness, your dedication to hitting the health club on a regular basis, and your ability to maintain a strong, lean, attractive physique – or at least your pursuit of that ideal. Good health is important to us, too.
However, as the premier image consulting experts in Philadelphia, we know there’s more to the gentlemanly lifestyle than just what you look like. It’s how you act. It’s how you carry yourself wherever you go. In short, your behavior impacts the image you project just as much as your appearance and how you communicate. Even though a gym is a place to sweat, and you’re expected to get a little dirty, you can still go about your business with charm and grace.
Here’s our blueprint for doing so.
Share The Space
Always be aware of your surroundings. You’re not the only member of the health club, nor the only one who needs to use that weight bench, treadmill, or corner of the locker room. No hogging or “saving” equipment by leaving a towel or belongings sitting on it to drive others away. That’s rude. Likewise for treating the locker room like your own personal walk-in closet. Always respect others. It’s that simple.
Mind Your Manners
This goes beyond simple common courtesy. You’re only human and we get it, sometimes you can’t help but notice attractive people working out all around you. But the gym is not a nightclub. People are there for a purpose and to reach certain goals, and getting hit on by strangers probably isn’t one of them. Be friendly. Smile. But keep a lid on the excessive flirtation.
Curb Your Enthusiasm
You’re working out hard. You take your fitness seriously, and that’s respectable. But yelling, dropping weights, or making a scene over a minor foul on the basketball court? That’s going a bit too far. Beast mode doesn’t have to be in everyone else’s face.
Clean Up After Yourself
Common courtesy dictates wiping off a machine after using it and not leaving a wet, slimy, smelly, germy trail everywhere you go. Most gyms keep spray bottles and paper towels handy for this express purpose. Still, many people fail to practice proper gym hygiene habits. Don’t be one of those people.
This also applies to equipment. Put it back where you found it, and better yet, make sure it’s properly organized. It’s frustrating when you’re looking for 50-pound dumbbells and you waste ten minutes of your workout time searching for them because they weren’t properly re-racked. Treat others how you want to be treated!
