Spring Menswear 2014: Colors And Fabric

Having just written up a few tips on how to manage spring temperature fluctuations, it’s important to remember that with spring comes a different color palette and different fabrications. Will you still wear your dark navy and charcoal worsted suits to the office in mid-May? Of course. Do you have the option to try out light grey and tan with some bolder color combinations? In many cases, absolutely.

Without further ado, here are Henry A. Davidsen’s tips for spring mens’ style.

Spring Menswear Color And Fabric Tips

1. Lighter greys rock.

One of the easiest ways to remain professionally appropriate and still give a nod to the season is to invest in suits in lighter shades of grey. If you’re in a very conservative office, a medium grey will keep the boss happy while still giving you warm weather style points. If you have more leeway, give that light grey number a shot.

2. Dress shirts come in more than white and blue.

Yes, you’ll still be wearing plenty of white and blue. But what about pink? Mint green? Canary yellow? Don’t be afraid to branch out into lighter, brighter colors when the weather warms up. If you’re not sure about your ability to pull off certain colors, come in and talk to us. We’re image consultants and are well-positioned to let you know what works for your skin tone, hair color, and eye color.

3. Have a little fun with your ties.

Again, the amount of fun you can have will often be dictated by your office dress code, but most men find that ties are an easy way to express their style a bit more deeply. Experiment with various colors and patterns, because while red ties with blue repp stripes will always be in style, a yellow tie with blue paisley is more seasonal.

4. Tan shoes.

British tan, camel, whatever you want to call it, you should own a pair or two (or eight, in Mike’s case). They’ll pair wonderfully with your light colored suits while simultaneously adding some spring flair to your all-season navy and charcoal suits. Just make sure you get either a belt or braces to match.

5. While we’re on the subject of footwear…

Socks are a great way to give a nod to the season without overpowering your audience. Thankfully, Henry A. Davidsen carries some of the best socks in the world, made by V.K. Nagrani. We have nearly every color combination and pattern imaginable, so you can easily coordinate with your tie, shirt, eyes, or even your boss’ tie if you’re feeling sycophantic.

After such a wretched winter, we’ve been looking forward to a blog post like this. Come see us soon to make sure your spring and summer wardrobes are up to snuff. We’re always happy to help.
