Ah, Robin Thicke’s “Blurred Lines.” In typical summer jam fashion, it’s neither musically complex nor lyrically deep, but it’s catchy as heck and this guy can actually sing. Great timing, too; since we recently did a profile on Justin Timberlake, the modern, up-to-the-minute clothes we see on Robin Thicke, Pharrell, and T.I in this video offer a style counterpoint to Justin’s classic throwbacks.
In case you’ve been living under a rock, here’s the PG-13 version of the video. You know, because we’re gentlemen.
Now that you’ve seen the video, let’s go over the garb. It bears repeating that these styles are trendy, and while that’s not necessarily a bad thing, building an entire wardrobe around clothes that look like this would be an unwise investment.
Robin Thicke’s Style
Mr. Thicke’s clothes are, in our opinion, the best of the bunch. He does the best job of keeping his style classic -dark suit, open white shirt, sleek shoes and aviators- but modernizing the fit to be slim and a bit cropped. He changes it up with a dark shirt and vest at some points, but if you were to go out dancing tonight wearing either outfit, you might just be the hottest b**ch in that place.
Supporting Cast Style
T.I.
T.I. has a similar look: “dressy” in the dark suit/light shirt combo and more casual in a dark crewneck and leather jacket, both with aviators too. He looks alright, but he’s wearing his pants below his hip bones, making the already too-short suit jacket look even shorter and this exposing his rear end. Poor form on that one.
Pharrell
Pharrell is the most adventurous of the bunch. His metallic silver track suit is obviously not wearable in the real world (unless you’re Pharrell, and if you’re reading this, Pharrell, good on you), but if you’re looking to be on the bleeding edge of fashion, his dressier outfit – leather blazer, cropped dress pants, dress shoes, with no socks, and straw fedora hat – is actually very cool.
Again, don’t spend a lot of money on looks like these, as they’ll be dated in a few years and you’ll have to buy new clothes to look fresh. But if you can pick up some threads like these and be economical about it, go ahead and have some fun. Just make sure you pull up your pants.
