On one hand, we hate to see the summer go. On the other hand, we’re getting tired of feeling like we’re walking around in a bowl of soup. Thankfully, we’re less than two months out from our favorite season: fall.
Here at Henry A. Davidsen, we are ready to enthusiastically embrace all of the wardrobe changes that go with it.
The master tailors and men’s suit specialists located right here at our boutique in the heart of Philadelphia recommend adding sport coats, denim, and boots to your fall wardrobe. Let’s take a closer look.
Sport Coats (Not Blazers)
We are addicted to sport coats and have been making quite a few up for our clients in recent months. Every man needs at least one or two. When it’s not quite cold enough to wear a winter coat but a crisp chill still lingers in the air, the mid-to-heavyweight sport coat is your best friend. It’s an effortless way to maintain a casual look that’s still elevated. In solids or plaids, it’s perfect for anything from business casual offices to an evening out.
Note that we didn’t say “blazer” but rather “sport coat.” The key difference between the two? Blazers have a nautical history and are typically a solid color with metal buttons (though the original ones had incredibly bold stripes). There’s nothing wrong with a blazer, but they’re a touch stuffier than sport coats.
On the other hand, sport jackets are mostly worn in a casual setting and have an outdoorsman’s pedigree; think horseback riding or fox hunting in the English countryside, and this immediately starts making sense. It’s easier to dress sport coats down than a blazer, and the bold plaids we often see on sport coats offer easy style for ther wearer.

Denim
A classic pair of denim jeans is a staple in every man’s fall wardrobe with so many different styles and fits to choose from. Generally speaking, a dark wash is quite versatile and can be dressed up with a sport coat or down with a sweater. Finding the perfect denim fit and wash can be a challenge though, and we’re currently vetting vendors for custom denim. Stay tuned for more on that!
Boots
Fall is the beginning of boot season, and if you don’t already have a couple of go-to pairs, it’s best to look to modern takes on classic styles.
Chelsea boots are permanently stylish and pair beautifully with sport coats and denim. They are ankle-height, lace-free, can be worn in almost any environment, and fit well into any man’s budget. Another great versatile fall boot to own, the chukka boot, is similar to a chelsea boot, the biggest difference being that it has laces. In the right colors and silhouettes, these boots can be dressed up with suits or dressed down with jeans.
