Superior Cloth Mills: Loro Piana
Always obsessed with the finer things, we’re continuing our series on superior cloth mills. We’re sticking to Italy today – our focus is on Loro Piana, one of the more popular household names in the fabric world and purveyor of some truly lovely cloth.
Loro Piana Background
Whether you’re aware of it or not is one thing, but chances are you’re already familiar with Loro Piana. Founded in 1927, the mill has been around for nearly a century. Originally a family firm from northern Italy’s Trivero, its majority owner is now LVMH, who bought their shares for €2 billion eight years ago.
Loro Piana also owns Solbiati, another mill we work with.
The reason you’re likely familiar with the brand is because their textiles are used in partnerships all up and down the retail clothing spectrum. J.Crew’s Ludlow suits, for example, use Loro Piana cloth. They also have a strong retail presence themselves, akin to that of Zegna.
Why Loro Piana?
Loro Piana has managed to maintain an eye for high quality goods while expanding globally – a challenging accomplishment, to be sure. Still, why would you consider Loro Piana cloth on your next custom suit?
Exceptional handle. Loro Piana is so concerned with high quality wool that they’ve sponsored an annual prize for the “best bale of wool” since 2000.
Selection. Loro Piana’s books are extensive, spanning a wide range of weights, materials, and colors. Their “Rain System” book contains specially-treated cottons from which to make custom rain jackets. In short, there’s something for everyone in Loro Piana’s collection.
Heritage. As custom menswear is an industry steeped in tradition, it’s no surprise that the mills we work with – Scabal, Dormeuil, and others – rightfully wear their heritage as a badge of honor. Loro Piana’s age, family beginnings, and commitment to quality put them right in league with the best of the best. Our clients appreciate this just as much as we do.
