Every October the same call starts coming in. It is rarely from the man who will wear the clothing. It is from his wife, his partner, sometimes his daughter, and it opens with a version of the same sentence: “I want to get him something custom, but I have no idea how this works.”
It is a fair thing to not know. Custom clothing is one of the few gifts you cannot simply buy, wrap, and hide in a closet. The whole point is that it is built for one specific body, and that body belongs to the person you are trying to surprise.
So here is the short answer. You can give a custom suit as a gift in two ways: give him the experience and let him be measured afterward, or design the garment yourself and let us handle the fit. Which one is right depends on how much of a surprise you want and when you want him wearing it.
We have been helping people in Philadelphia give this gift since 2006. This is how we would walk you through it across the table in our showroom.
Gifting The Custom Process
A custom garment is not a size. It is a set of measurements and observations taken from one man: the slope of his shoulders, how he stands, which arm hangs lower, where he carries his weight. None of that is on the tag of the jacket in his closet.
This is why borrowing his best-fitting suit and handing it to a tailor does not work. That suit tells us what he settled for, not what fits him. If off-the-rack clothing fit him well, you would not be reading this.
It is also why we will not build a garment from numbers you took with a tape measure in the kitchen. We would rather tell you that plainly now than hand you something in December that is close. The difference between made-to-measure and bespoke matters less here than the simple fact that both begin with him standing in front of us.
That sounds like it ruins the surprise. It does not. It just changes what the surprise is.
Two Ways To Give
1. Give him the session
The first option is a gift card that he brings in for a session with us. He opens an envelope, not a garment, and the garment comes later.
People sometimes worry this feels like less of a gift. In our experience it is the opposite. Most men have never had anyone ask what they do for a living, how they want to be seen, and what they have always disliked about their clothes, then build something around the answers. The consultation is the part clients talk about afterward.
It is also the option with no risk. He chooses the cloth, he is measured properly, and nothing is built until he has had his say.
2. Design it for him
The second option is a design appointment, and it is for the person who wants to do more than hand over an envelope. You come in, without him, and you make the decisions: the cloth, the color, the lining, the buttons, the monogram inside the jacket that only he will ever see.
We guide you through it. You know him better than we do, and we know what a navy hopsack does on a man who runs warm. Between the two of us, we get to something he would not have picked for himself and will not want to take off.
The fit still has to come from him. If he is already a client, we have his measurements on file and can build from those. If he is not, he comes in to be measured after you have given him the gift, and what he unwraps is the design: the cloth you chose and the details you picked, waiting for him.
The Date That Matters: October 31
Custom clothing is not built for last-minute shopping. Made-to-measure takes six to eight weeks from the order, and bespoke takes twelve to fourteen. We have written about how far in advance to order custom garments in more detail, but for the holidays the arithmetic is simple.
If you want him to have something in time for the holidays, talk to us by October 31.
That date is the comfortable deadline, not a marketing one. Eight weeks from the end of October lands in the last week of December, and we would rather finish early than explain a delay on the 23rd.
If you are reading this in November or December, you still have good options:
- The session has no deadline. A gift card can be arranged quickly, and he books his appointment in the new year when the calendar is quiet.
- The design appointment still works. You make the choices now, he opens the design, and the garment follows.
- A rush is sometimes possible. It carries a significant fee and narrows the choice of cloth, so we will tell you honestly whether it is worth it.
What we will not do is promise a date we cannot keep. If the timing does not work for what you have in mind, we will say so on the first call and suggest what does.
Can you buy a custom suit for someone else?
Yes. You either give a gift card for a session, where he is measured and chooses his own cloth, or you book a design appointment and choose the cloth and details for him. In both cases the fit comes from his measurements, not from a guess.
Can a custom suit be a complete surprise?
The gift can be. A finished garment can only be a complete surprise if we already have his measurements on file. Otherwise he opens a gift card or the design you created, and is measured afterward.
How long does a custom suit take?
Made-to-measure takes six to eight weeks and bespoke takes twelve to fourteen. For a holiday gift he can wear in December, start the conversation by October 31. Our post on how long a custom suit takes in Philadelphia covers the full timeline.
What if he does not like what I picked?
[CONFIRM policy. Suggested answer if true: Nothing is cut until he has been measured, so there is a natural moment for him to adjust a detail before the order is placed.]
Does it have to be a suit?
No. Shirts, sport coats, trousers, overcoats, and custom jeans all make good gifts, and for many men they get more wear than a suit would.
Does he have to come to Philadelphia?
He needs to be measured in person at our showroom at 1701 Spruce Street. You can arrange the gift itself by phone.
Start With A Conversation
You do not need to arrive with a plan. Tell us who he is, what you have in mind, and when you want him to have it, and we will tell you which route fits and what it will take.
We are not trying to sell you the largest thing in the room. We are trying to make sure that what he opens is something he keeps wearing long after the season is over.
Request a consultation or call us at 215-310-0219. If the holidays are the goal, do it before October 31.
